Welcome to the Westerly Music curriculum page! This draft version of the Core Arts Standards based curriculum will be posted for review, comment and critique.
Welcome to the Westerly Music Curriculum draft site. Comments and suggestions are welcome as we navigate creating a comprehensive music curriculum based on the National Core Arts Standards in Music! Here are some notes to consider before perusing the various sections posted thus far. General Layout: The National Core Arts Standards consist of 4 artistic processes: Create, Perform, Respond and Connect. Each process contains several anchor standards with corresponding performance standards, broken down by grade level. In this document, performance standards are listed for each grade level and then the corresponding tasks and skills used to achieve the standard. Assessments are also listed for each of these skills. K-8 General Music: Each performance standard throughout the general music portion has been rephrased into an "I can" statement. These statements, designed to be user friendly for the student, will help students be aware of what music process they are engaged in. These statements get more complex through the grades but aim to keep the standards on the level of the student and help them to take responsibility for their own learning. Middle School Band: Band is organized similarly to general music, listing performance standards and skills for each artistic process: create, perform, respond, connect. These standards generally use the same language found in the core arts standard document for "Emerging Ensembles." MCAS: Throughout, tasks and assements reflect the suggested "Model CornerStone Assessments." While still in development, these assessments represent essential benchmark skills for each area of the Core Arts standards and have been included throughout the curriculum draft. There is still a lot more to come. Stay tuned for additional updates.
